Explain What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)?


UDL is the Universal Design Learning that can be defined as the approach that provides students the ability to learn by minimizing barriers and maximizes learning for all students. Curriculum essentially should cross against multiple backgrounds and cultural barriers. As a teacher, you must keep in mind the different backgrounds students come from and provide an opportunity for all students to feel included. Students need to gain knowledge, skills and recognition, every student is different. A Universal Design learning approach takes the idea and customizes it to make learning goals, methods and approaches reachable. Some ways to utilize inclusion will be representation through graphics and animation, provide multiple means of expressing what they know, provide multiple means of engagement. Analyzing UDL Butterfly Lesson Plan
Why?
Students will learn about the life cycle of butterflies by identifying characteristics of each stage within the life cycles. Students are provided multiple learning opportunities through learning centers such as a book center, art center, writing center and graphic organizer center. By utilizing learning centers, students have the opportunity to tackle various skill levels.
What?
Students participate in a class discussion while the teacher utilities Kidspiration to lead a brain storming session on the topic of life cycle. Students will then participate in a read aloud and identify the various stages, after the read aloud students share pictures of the cycle.
How?
Students are provided an opportunity to showcase their prior knowledge by participating in the class discussion as well as identifying key details they may know. By providing a scaffolding method approach, this lesson plan follows under the UDL model as students are provided an opportunity to make connections to representations, provide multiple means of expressing and and engagement.

Week 5: Assignment 2

Assistive technology is defined as any product or tool that increase and/or maintain the functional capacities of children of disabilities. Some of the functions that are targeted through assistive technology include cognitive problems and physical impairment. The use of technology within the last decade has become a big push amongst various platforms and has served as a great resource for students, teachers and administrators. There are various tools that can be used to improve listening, math skills, organization and memory, reading and writing. Some ATs provide students with spoken language difficulties an opportunity to utilize during lessons and during meetings. This provides students an equal playing field amongst their fellow classmates. In addition, the company advocates for changes within education policies that benefits students and teachers.
